Dr. Judah Folkman (biography), a groundbreaking cancer researcher of Children's Hospital Boston, died of an apparent heart attack late Monday. He was 74.

Dr. Folkman, who was thought of the man that would cure cancer and director of the vascular biology program at the hospital, proved that the growth of tumors could be stopped or even reversed by cutting off the blood supply that cancer needs to grow.

Based on the results from his research, some pharmaceutical companies today are testing dozens of drugs that treat cancer without the toxic side effects of conventional chemotherapy. Several of these drugs, called angiogenesis [wiki] inhibitors, are already available and have been proven to extend the lives of advanced cancer patients by at least a few months. Source: Boston.com
