Stadiums of the 2011 Rugby World Cup

The 2011 Rugby World Cup, will be the third biggest international sporting event in terms of attendance. It will take place in New Zealand for the second time (last time in 1987). 13 Stadiums will be used in the tournament, and here is a run down of the parks.

Eden Park, Auckland

Being the host of the inaugural Rugby World final in 1987, Eden Park will be the first stadium to host two World Cup finals as it will be the focal point of the 2011 World Cup, hosting nine matches, including the opener, two semi finals and the final of course. The stadium can permanently seat 50,000 people but also has the ability to hold 60,000.

Lancaster Park, Christchurch

A stadium of many names. Currently known as AMI Stadium due to sponsorship right, formerly known as Jade Stadium and during the World Cup will be referred to as Christchurch stadium. The 38,628 seater hosts a variety of sports year-round and is home to Super Rugby side Crusaders.

Westpac Stadium, Wellington

One of the newer stadiums in this World Cup (built in 1999), the 36,000 seater and home to Super Rugby’s Hurricanes will host 7 matches during the 2011 World Cup and is mostly known to locals as The Stadium or The Cake-Tin in other parts of the nation.

Rotorua International Stadium, Rotorua

Built in 1911 and with a capacity of 34,000, ‘The Hangi Pit’ will host 3 matches during the 2011 World Cup.

Carisbrook, Dunedin

They’re building a new stadium in Dunedin, but if they don’t finish it on time for the World Cup, this old one, opened back in 1883, will be used for probably one final go. Known as The House of Pain due to the difficulty for visiting teams to win there, Carisbrook seats 29,000 fans and is home to the Highlanders in Super Rugby.

Waikato Stadium, Hamilton

Home of the Chiefs in Super Rugby and Waikato Rugby Union in the ANZC , Waikato Stadium seats 25,800 fans and will host 3 matches during the World Cup.

North Harbour Stadium, Auckland

One of two World Cup stadiums in Auckland, North Harbour seats 25,000 fans and was opened in 1997. Three World Cup matches will be played at North Harbour and is an occasional home to the Auckland Blues in Super Rugby.

Okara Park, Whangarei

Home to Northland Rugby Union, Okara Park seats 30,000 people and will host two World Cup Matches in 2011.

Yarrow Stadium, New Plymouth

Built in 2002, Yarrow Stadium will host 3 World Cup Matches and can seat 30,000 fans.

McLean Park, Napier

Usually a Cricket stadium, McLean Park will host 3 matches during the World Cup and seats 22,000 people.

Trafalgar Park, Nelson

Home to the Tasman Makos, Trafalgar Park, named after the battle of Trafalgar, was upgraded to hold just over 20,000 fans for the 2011 World Cup and 2 matches will be played there during the tournament.

Arena Manawatu, Palmerston North

Part of the Arena Manawatu sports complex, FMG stadium will host two games in the World Cup and can seat 18,000 fans. The stadium is undergoing upgrades for the World Cup so it can seat over 20,000.

Vuvuzelas, South African World Cup Buzzing Trumpets Are Manufactured By Home-based Factory in China

Vuvuzelas, the annoying trumpets blown all venues of FIFA 2010 World Cup South Africa, are manufactured by home-based business in China. A vuvuzela sold to nearly ten US dollars in South Africa, only has a cost about 2 Yuan  (FYI, 1US$~6.79Yuan at current currency exchange rate).

Before the opening of World Cup, Wu exported 1 million vuvuzelas to South Africa, with each having a profit margin only 0.1 Yuan, so he did not make too much money. Now he improved its price to 3 Yuan each, in a bid to own more.

Abby Sunderland Battling Bad Weather In Indian Ocean

This is a follow-up report to the earlier entry Abby Sunderland Might Lost At Sea. Glad to know that Miss Sunderland has contacted his family via satellite phone. The latest post on Abby’s Blog (URL: Soloround.blogspot.com) give us a glimpse of her current condition that she is battling the bad weather in the Indian Ocean:

We spoke with Abby early this morning and learned that she had had a very rough day with winds up to 60 knots and seas 20-25 feet. She had been knocked down several times but was handling things well. The wind had subsided to around 35 knots which she and Wild Eyes are quite comfortable with.

We were helping her troubleshoot her engine that she was trying to start to charge her systems. Satellite phone reception was patchy. She was able to get the water out of the engine and start her up. We were waiting to hear back from her when American Search & Rescue authorities called to report having received a signal from her emergency beacon (EPIRB). We initially thought that the signal was sent automatically from her water-activated EPIRB and that it had been activated during one of her knockdowns. As we pulled the paperwork from her EPIRB registration, we learned that the signal had come from her manually activated EPIRB.

We were referred to Australian Search & Rescue and while we were on the phone with them another signal came in from her handheld PLB (Personal Locator Beacon). Her water-activated EPIRB has not been activated so we are hopeful that the boat is still upright.

We are working closely with American, French and Australian Search & Rescue authorities to coordinate several ships in the area to divert to her location. There are several ships in her area, the earliest possible contact is 40 hours. We are actively seeking out some sort of air rescue but this is difficult due to the remoteness of her location. Australian Search & Rescue have arranged to have a Quantas Airbus fly over her location at first light (she is 11 hours later). They will not be able to help her other than to talk via marine radio if they are able to get close enough. Hopefully, they will be able to assess her situation and report back to us.

Abby has all of the equipment on board to survive a crisis situation like this. She has a dry suit, survival suit, life raft, and ditch bag with emergency supplies. If she can keep warm and hang on, help will be there as soon as possible. Wild Eyes is designed for travel in the Southern Ocean and is equipped with 5 air-tight bulkheads to keep her buoyant in the event of major hull damage. It is built to Category 0 standards and is designed to self-right in the event of capsize.

Thank you for all of your kind emails and calls. We appreciate your prayers and support.

We will update as soon as there is some news.

Laurence, Marianne and Team Abby

Abby Sunderland is kept in our prayers!

Former International Olympic Committee president Juan Antonio Samaranch has died in hospital after being taken ill at the weekend.

The 89-year-old was admitted to the Quiron Hospital in Barcelona where he was being treated for heart problems.

The Spaniard was widely regarded as the most powerful man in sport when he headed the IOC from 1980 to 2001.

Born in Barcelona on 17 July, 1920, Samaranch enjoyed success as a roller-skater and led the Spanish team to the world title.

He pursued a career in sports politics in fascist dictator Francisco Franco's Spain and won a place on the IOC in 1966.
After Franco's death, Samaranch was appointed ambassador to the Soviet Union and the contacts he made there helped him succeed Lord Killanin as IOC president in 1980. He oversaw the commercialisation of the Olympics during the 1980s and 1990s and established the Games as a world force.

Sarah Gronert Hermaphrodite Controversy

German tennis player sarah gronert photo
Sarah Gronert

Sarah Gronert, a German pro tennis player, is embroidered in a hermaphrodite controversy. Sarah Gronert, 22, who ranks No. 619 in the world, was born as a hermaphrodite due to possessing both male and female genitalia.

Gronert’s male sexual characteristic part was later surgically removed (after suffering the discrimination originating from her unique gender status during the tennis competition) three years ago and she became a legally woman.

It appeared that was not enough. After Sarah Gronert beat competitor Julia Glushko in the Raanana tournament in Israel early this month, the latter’s coach Schlomo Tzoref raised the issue, saying Sarah Gronert is “a man”

German tennis player sarah gronert picture
Sarah Gronert

"There is no girl who can hit serves like that, not even Venus Williams. When I heard her story, I was in shock. I don't know if it's fair that she can compete or not. She does have an advantage, but if this is what the WTA have decided, they probably know best. If she begins to play continuously, within six months she will be within the Top 50." said Schlomo Tzoref, according to Fanhouse.

"This can not be. This is not a woman, it's a man. She does not have the power of a woman and no woman has such a technique. She serves like a man. It's very strange." Tzoref continued.

We sympathized with Miss Gronert!. She deserves no all of those woman-or-man ridicule!

Henrik Stenson Underwear Golf! Golfer Henrik Stenson, of Sweden, is nowadays competing with Tiger Woods at the World Golf Championships-CA Championship at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa in Miami, Florida. Apparently, Henrik Stenson (not Henrik Stevenson or Henrik Stevens), stole some spotlights from Tiger Woods at the opening round of the PGA Tour championship yesterday. After a wayward tee shot of the par-4 third hole landing in the mud, Henrik took off the clothes to only his white underwear and one glove to play that shot, stunning the audience who were watching the game. Later Stenson teased he couldn't afford to play in his clothes due to the mud because it would have been a real mess, according to NPR. Visanthe Shiancoe Picture Scandal: Postgame Naked Visanthe Shiancoe's Penis Accidentally Live on TV!

The picture/Youtube video of Visanthe Shiancoe in the locker room after Dec 7's game between his team Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions, is a hot sought item on the internet now. Excerpts below explained the reason:

From San Jose Mercury News via Mlive.com

...there was a literal undressing. As the network showed postgame footage of the Vikings celebrating a victory against the Lions, tight end Visanthe Shiancoe was wearing a towel that wasn't doing its job, meaning the nation got a close-up look at Shiancoe that made the Janet Jackson controversy look tame by comparison.

More details from Stupidcelebrities.net:

The Vikings’ Visanthe Shiancoe had quite a bit of exposure during a recent postgame video. During this postgame video that aired on Sunday from inside the Minnesota Vikings’ locker room was a quick shot of Visanthe Shiancoe’s penis.

Minnesota Vikings Visanthe Shiancoe had a little problem with his towel, as it slipped down revealing his pretty impressive penis. The flash only lasted a fifth of a second but of course the YouTube video shows the entire episode in slow motion.
