Kayo Aiko vs. Giant Jenga

This is here mostly for the sheer WTF? factor... my estimates say this show was done about summer 2005.

1.) Regular-size Jenga:

2.) This is gonna get wacky:

3.) Don't ask me who that guy is, all dressed up for television...

4.) Aiko's amazing balloon-piercing magic trick (with same mystery-man/lovely assistant in the background):

5.) You know that removing the outside blocks really weakens the structure:

6.) Apparently she didn't get killed by those blocks falling on her. No good moves left, really:

This is a nightmare come to life. I like Jenga, I just don't want to play with a set that might crush me.

Anybody got more info on this... what show it is, perhaps?

Obligatory March post: I still love Slayer...

Aiko continues her journey through life, food, friends, and backstage areas at her blog. Nothing terribly exciting going on with her, really; she helped celebrate Saito Michi's 24th birthday about a week ago, and took a few pictures with the rest of Kingyo, which is cool, because Aiko totally hangs out with that chick from 'dream'.

Going on two years with no solo single release, I've been wondering whether we'll ever see another one. As long as she keeps posting, we'll at least know where she is and that she's doing okay... No posts yet about moving back in with the folks, so more power to her, I just miss the music, is all. It was lots of fun while it lasted.

Still loving all sorts of Japanese (and other Asian countries') music, three years after discovering it. Almost shed a few tears over a Mini Moni song this morning, in fact. Doesn't mean I've forgotten my roots. Today at work I listened to a C-ute record, then a Slayer record, then an SNSD record, then a Pantera record, then a Berryz Kobo record. And I loved every minuted of it. And yes, I alternated genres on purpose.

Just because I love things like Aiko and Koha doesn't mean I've lost any love for good hard rock n' roll. I thought that Guns N' Roses newest album 'Chinese Democracy' was a tour de force, though many people disagree, and that's okay, so long as someone's paying attention. I even think there's a lot to be taken from Metallica's latest, 'Death Magnetic', though my love for that band has waned in the past few years.

Still got all my bases covered, musically, and I haven't taken on one genre to spite the other. I love Mini Moni, and I love Slayer. Darn it, but I do love Slayer...

Another wota blogger has informed me (and the rest of the world) that his efforts have actually been seen by the management that runs his favorite Japanese-girl talent agency. This only renews my hope that in time, I may actually be able to contact Ms. Kayo Aiko (through the proper channels) and someday get her seal of approval for my work here. Only time will tell.

All I know is, I've been lazy about this site for the last six weeks or so. I've still got to get through six more single re-caps, translate every song she's ever done, minus four, into English (for those who enjoy that sort of thing), and possibly discover some gems from the past that are rarely discussed online. Oh, and get my Saito Michi site up, too, maybe.

Like always, promises, promises... but it'll happen, just believe. There are plenty of Aiko fans out there, I know for a fact, and they'll either contribute to or take enjoyment from this site as it just keeps getting bigger and bigger and bigger.

P.S. According to these ears, 'W's 'Arrivederci' features a guitar solo from a real, unplugged, actual acoustic steel-string guitar, unlike most recordings, which would normally go with a piezo pickup for ease-of-use over reality. What a nice touch.

SCORE!!!

Marking a record seven posts in one month, meanwhile providing some Aiko information.  I finally figured out something that's been bugging the crap out of me since the first time I heard this song (almost three years ago).

At the start of 'Fantasy', Aiko sings something I presumed was English, because I never knew what she said.  Looking back at my data, I noticed that the song was originally done by Virginelle.  Lo and behold, the first couplets in Aiko's version of 'Fantasy' are from the chorus of the original song. Listen to it here.

Aiko sings (are you ready for this?):

"Carry on too many times for love / I only played as ever with your heart
I don't know, it's like a fantasy / You're only mine, oh what a melody"

Listen to Aiko again, and that's exactly what she's saying.  This is the most English she's ever sung on record.  I know, it doesn't make a lot of sense, and I know, it's hard to understand Aiko when she sings in 'Engrish'.  But I finally figured out what she's singing!  And now you can sing along, too.

Then, a few minutes later I discovered this little tidbit.  Aiko sits in a cafe during the Aishite ne Motto video, and this same place is the setting for a Capsule video.  Capsule was produced by the same guy who produces Perfume, and also did 'cosmic cosmetics'.  Observe:

New 'New Year's resolution': acquire all the Capsule music ever made. This stuff is catchy as hell!

新年おめでとうございま~す!

Well, a happy New Year to everyone out there, and good riddance to 2008.

I've ramped up the site a bit, added tags and a few more links, and hopefully soon should have a respectable fansite going.  For instance, click on "English" in the labels to your right, and you'll have four Aiko Kayo songs translated to our native tongue.

Aiko posted on her blog December 31 and sincerely apologized for taking a week off from posting.  Basically she said, things have been busy, Cheer Up * Indies recorded its last 2008 show, and that she'll try to be more consistent with posting in the coming year.  Also, she asks that we wish her luck for the New Year (ganbatte, Aiko-chan!) and that she'll try her best as always.

I'd like to make the same promise for this blog.  I'll stick to posting about Aiko (although if I increase posting, expect a lot of information about some of my other favorites), try to provide as much information as possible about Aiko as soon as possible, and be as generous as I can.

I hadn't noticed that 'Baba' commented on my first LOVERS HIGH review over a month ago, and said "Thanks for writing this".  I'm not sure if he (or she) was referring to the movie synopsis (probably the only one available, definitely the most in-depth), or the whole site, but a belated "you're welcome" to Baba, and everyone who might read this.  More to come, please check back soon;  and while you're at it, see if you can Google some keywords to get my site to come up prominently in the search.  I'm in there somewhere...

Finally, I'll post the first picture of Aiko I ever saw:  no longer on Wikipedia, but here for posterity.  It began my whole obsession, and is therefore responsible for bringing this site to you.  You can't look away!!!

Aiko has grown on me.

Ms. Kayo,

I wanted to share this with the 'net.  From early 2004, left; taken about a week ago, right.  You sure have changed in five years, but of course, you're still cute as always.  I definitely 'aishite ne' you, motto.  And not just because you said so.  But you did say so.

A Mysterious Picture

A real and tangible prize (taking a note from the Publius Enigma of Pink Floyd) for anyone who can unravel this mystery:  a picture titled "AiAiAi".

This is as high-quality as I've got, and appearing here are unmistakeably Kago Ai, and Takahashi Ai, but who's that in the middle?  This Aiko expert says that it is, in fact, Ms. Kayo.  But this has not been corroborated.  If it's anybody else, my guess is Tanaka Reina.  The only problem is that Ms. Tanaka Reina appears to be at the right edge of the photo.

So the mystery is this:  if this is indeed a photo of Kago Ai, Kayo Aiko, and Takahashi Ai, then why would Reina (who was chosen at an audition later than Aiko's) be there?  In other words, what event is this from?  H!P costume experts, I'm counting on you.

And if this is, in fact, from a later event, it's nice to see that Ms. Kayo gets along with the other girls who were lucky enough to be chosen, even a generation later.

Spanish, anyone?

This just in, spanish chicks love Aiko (more).  Not one, but three spanish-language overdubs of 'Aishite ne Motto' (be warned, amateur audio follows):

Aiko Landmark Tour

I've spent some time now obsessing over a few short blocks along 国道 'Kokudou' (Highway) 16 in Fussa, Tokyo. Aiko and a photo crew spent a memorable morning or afternoon here, and it makes me wonder whose idea it was... or did they just happen to be there... or was there an intentional nod to the US military on this one?

Fussa is home to Yokota Air Base, not far from where the outdoor shots for the "cosmic cosmetics" cover were taken. Apparently they wandered a few blocks and found everything they needed. So, the complete tour...
Three points of interest:

(1.) Nicola Pizza. They just got a picture of the sign out front, but this link(don't forget to click on the picture for the original photo) shows the whole establishment. From the CD:

(2.) Blue Seal Ice Cream. Started in Okinawa for the benefit of (again) American troops, Blue Seal opened a store here, offering all sorts of unlikely ice cream flavors that Aiko probably digs. Her shoulders are barely taller than the windowframes. I might be able to break a window with my knee, but looks are deceiving. Why didn't they get a picture of her hanging out at 'George's Insurance'? First, Google Maps 'street view':
Aiko stands against the facade (Blue Seal banner in the reflection):
"Gimme a wasabi cone with chocolate sprinkles":
The Blue Seal logo has been (mostly) covered up by the song title.

Finally, (3.) Big Mama American Antiques; first, the cover:
In real life, this is what the place looks like when shuttered. More on that in just a second.
Last photo I'll share for now:
Presented for your consideration is a photo of (most of) the storefront which shows the awning and the shutter system. Store hours shown are 1:00PM to 8:00PM, odd hours, which puts the Google cameras on this street sometime in the morning or early afternoon. If they'd have just waited a few more hours, we'd see the nice woodwork shown here.

All of these, just a few short blocks away from each other. Be like Aiko and spend an afternoon in Fussa. You'd best believe that if I'm ever in the neighborhood, I'll take a few pictures of myself in similar poses.

'solitude' translation

A post on yahoo!answers gave me the gumption to do a full translation of this song;  had I been a little more savvy, I'd have noticed that the answer was 'closed'.  No worries, though, it's here for posterity.  A few disclaimers and it's on with the show (you can always skip this introduction and just scroll down to the song).

First, I'm only guessing that Aiko sings this to someone in particular in first person, though it seems highly likely.  My verb forms aren't very precise, and it's possible that I'm waay off the mark on some of this.  However, the romaji is correct, disregarding the spaces between some words (and it can vary sometimes, depending on the translator.)

I try to make my translations follow the original text as closely as possible, so that the English wording is aligned with the Japanese wording.  I never combine two lines to make a more fluid sentence structure.  Because of this, however, it's easier to pick out the source word(s) and come up with a more precise meaning on your own.

The romaji is a modified Hepburn style which should make sense to beginners and experts alike.  The perfectionist in me wants to have it in 'kunrei-shiki' style so that it can be back-translated, but it's harder to sing along with.  So all my romaji will be in this style, for future reference.  I won't be mentioning this again in future posts, but just so you know.

Last, unless it infringes on other applicable laws, I hereby release the romaji and translation to the public domain, to be used in any way, by anyone, for any purpose.  If you repost, please also provide the songwriter credits.  Thanks!

Girl's Box LOVERS HIGH Movie Review, Part Five

Finally, I get to talk about Aiko again.  I won't spend a lot of time talking about how cute she looks or how well she does with her part, as I'll have plenty of time in the future to do all this and more.  No, the issue at hand is LOVERS HIGH, the Girl's Box Movie, a film I've wanted to see since I heard it was being made.

In this film, Aiko plays 'Ai', a name which I'm sure took countless hours of thought, but I'm just kidding, that's not the important part.  She gets a much bigger role than Nacchan and like Nami (Nao) and Yua (Yu), Ai is a waitress at the Girl's Box bar.

We get our first glimpse of Aiko in the 'apartment' above the bar, slaving away making what looks like (at best) two helpings of beef stew.  She offers Nami a taste test and Nami confirms that it's good indeed.  This pleases Ai, until Nana wordlessly wanders off with her guitar.  Ai says essentially, "where are you going, don't you want your thimble-full of stew?" and Nana replies, "lay off!"  This does not please Ai, and their long-term rivalry is made apparent when Ai gets upset and starts throwing air punches and kicks, but the arrival of Yua is enough to lift Ai's spirits.

Throughout it all, Aiko plays the 'girlie' character that everyone likes, save Nacchan, who has issues with everyone.  Ai cooks, she can't stand beer and she makes it known, and she gathers a crowd of would-be admirers when papering the town for the Big Blowout.  Later, at the event itself, she's confronted by two men who say "hey, Ai, you said we could go out sometime!" alluding to some empty promise she'd made just to get them to the bar, and Miku (Michi) abandons Ai to deal with the situation on her own.  Instead of standing up to the pair of guys, Ai wordlessly crouches to the floor with a panicked look as they lean in on her.  Another hilarious/cute-as-a-bedbug's-ear moment from Aiko, and I laugh every time I see this.

It's soon discovered that Aiko has a singing talent and thus begins Phase 2 of 'Save Girl's Box', where a little bar becomes a big hit after showing off some local talent, courtesy of the soundtrack songs.  She sings 'Runaway Girl' in a montage that shows the bar gaining more and more popularity, and in the end it's decided that Kingyo (Yua, Nami, and Aiko) should be formed and marketed.  So they use Mama's old song, "Lover's High", and based on the strength of that one song, they are given the keys to super-stardom.  And that's where the movie ends, you know, back where you bought the Lover's High single.

It's great to see Aiko in a movie, especially a good film like this.  It was well-acted, well-edited, and well, everything else was enjoyable, and in repeated viewings it hasn't lost much integrity in this viewer's opinion.  All the girls do a great job acting and singing, and at the end of the day, they have nothing to be ashamed of.  I curse them not, and this movie has served its purpose in introducing me to the others to whom I haven't been paying attention.  If only the marketing department and the writers could be so lucky as to be spared the wrath of my rantings...

First of all, writers, that's enough!  Stop pretending that Aiko needs to be coaxed into singing.  Furthermore, stop perpetuating the myth that anyone can sing, provided you push on their stomach!  She's been the featured soloist on 12 singles that date back to 5 years ago -- we don't need convincing!  Even -if- it had to be done for delicate story purposes (i.e., to keep the bar in business), this is the one and only time you can play that card, and ever after, she's a singer!  Not an "oh-my-god, I could have been singing this whole time" singer, but in reality, an "I can sing, I've done it before, it's no problem" singer.  She sings;  she's a singer.

Next, there's a scene in this movie where the girls first listen to "Lover's High" and we watch them fawn over the 'unheard' and beautiful song.  This would've had more impact on the core audience, -if- we hadn't gone partially deaf in the last year from listening to it endlessly, waiting for the movie to come out.  Kingyo really needed a B-side, you know, a 'c/w', which would have given the group a little more depth.  Instead, you marketing geniuses said, "one song, that's all you get!" and it appears that the viewers have more insight into the group than the girls themselves.  Please buy a clue and put the song out at the same time as the movie, not a full year before!  Any of those who thought this movie might be slightly esoteric have already refused to buy a ticket based on the song they've already heard!

Last, when it comes to Special Features on the DVD, let's think about the market.  If you offer a Special Edition for $20 more than the Regular version, please put features on the 'other disc' that the dedicated fan might like to see, and hasn't already been assimilated by the target audience.  The one feature which no one has already seen is a skit done by the lead actresses for the film's première, the rest are already in the collection of those who've paid a premium.  The "Original PV Clip" of Lover's High... I already have.  The "Movie Version PV Clip" of Lover's High... I already have.  As I paid at least $10 more dollars each for the DVD versions of the single and movie soundtrack, respectively, I should get more from the "Special Edition" of the film.  Is it too much to ask?  Those who purchase the overpriced 'Special' film will undoubtedly have purchased the "Special Editions" of 'Lover's High' and the 'Girl's Box Movie Original Soundtrack'.  Again, buy a clue... does it do any good in the long run, for Aiko's sake, to rip off hardcore fans while simultaneously alienating the casual fan?

I sigh deeply and admit that I'll buy anything which gives me more Aiko, anytime, anywhere.  But it makes this fan wonder if the stone isn't exhausted from being bled dry.  The future of Aiko depends on you marketing so-and-so's.

A lot has changed since I first registered this site.  She stopped putting out singles in favor of 'Cheer Up Indies!', another show which the Japanese can see but I can't.  Her popularity could transcend Japan's coastal limits;  her personality is so askew from the global status quo that we could use such optimism down here in the doldrums.  And yet you squander it all for a quick buck.

Ms. Kayo, I have not lost faith in you.  I'm writing you in for President, if only to see how the voting machines scan your name (嘉陽愛子).  And the worst crime of all would be to let you fade into obscurity because your reputation has been besmirched.  This site was intended as a counter to that possibility.

So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

English, please.

Ms. Kayo,

Here are a couple translations that I've been lucky enough to find.  Sorry I don't have any credits to add (with the exception of 'Kanojo' being found at kiwi-musume.com), so if anyone knows where to find these otherwise, please send me the site and/or translator credit.  Nothing personal, folks.

Hitomi no Naka no Meikyuu (1st single, "The Maze in My Eyes", officially titled 瞳の中の迷宮)

I want to meet you… I can’t meet you

My prayers don’t reach you as much as my feelings for you grow

I’m sure it’s because I lost sight of something
All this time, I believed that

Only the things reflected in my eyes are the sole truth, but-
There isn’t just one world, there’s a world called “if”

I know that it exists infinitely and now I’m puzzled in it

I want to meet you… I can’t meet you

I won’t stop regretting until I tell you my thoughts

I won’t lose, I won’t abandon

Even if I sacrifice my body I’ll find you

Because even if the darkness

Blocks my path

And my timid heart is lead astray

I’ll keep searching for you without giving up
That’s right, to find you is to find myself

I won’t forget that promise we made to each other now

We met many times; I was saved often

Everything will turn into courage, I’m not all alone
I want to meet you… I can’t meet you

Because if that’s a trial, then I’ll definitely overcome it

Without losing, without abandoning

Please wait for me

And believe in me

I want to meet you… I can’t meet you

My prayers don’t reach you as much as my feelings for you grow

I’m sure it’s because I lost sight of something

I want to meet you… I can’t meet you

Where are you now?
Because I’ll definitely find you out

What I’ve gotten lost in is the maze in my eyes

Because even if the darkness blocks my path

And my timid heart is lead astray

I’ll keep searching for you without giving up

Ai Shite ne Motto (2nd single, "Love Me More", officially titled 愛してね もっと)

For the first time I couldn't sleep
I want to see you right now
So the warmth from you holding me
Never, never disappears

The love that began that day
Hasn't changed even now
I just want to treasure
This time of ours together

Love me more
Hey, love me more,
More, I just love you!

For the first time i hurt you
I can't stop crying
This pain in my heart, it feels as if it's about to burst
I just want you to be with me

I love you forever
Just look at me

-------

Kanojo wa Gokigen Naname (8th single, "She's in a Bad Mood", officially titled 彼女はゴキゲンななめ)

I talk to you, I smile at you

But your head is in the clouds somewhere

My kisses aren’t enough, there’s no tenderness

Where did our love go?

Have you been cheating on me? I try to keep busy

Tears overflow right away
But I can’t hate you, I can’t give in

You’re not playing fair

It’s kind of, sort of

Suspicious

I quietly, quietly look into your eyes

I know right away what you’ve been hiding

Do you think you’ve been caught?

Wait a minute! Wasn’t this love

Supposed to last forever?
Look only at me

Whenever, wherever we are

Why, why haven’t you noticed

I’m in a bad mood?

We used to always pick out fancy clothes

And go out together

And then we’d be all over each other

That was such a happy time

But now it’s just jerseys and sandals

And the convenience store

That was fine to begin with

But the novelty wears off right away

I kind of, sort of

Don’t think it’s fun

I’m going to sulk now

Will you start panicking right away?

Wait a minute! Has this love

Changed its shape too?

I get a shock, maybe

It’s not someone else’s fault

It’s my fault too, but I’m in a bad mood

Wait a minute! Wasn’t this love

Supposed to last forever?
Look only at me

Whenever, wherever we are

Why, why haven’t you noticed

I’m in a bad mood?

What?

Ms. Kayo,

I know I promised a long time ago to keep this blog up, and I'm sorry.  Please don't give me that look.

It's not MY fault that there are only a handful of English-language Aiko Kayo resources online.

I was hoping that someone with a little more knowledge on the subject (and better language skeelz) might step forward and inform us about what's going on in your world, in our words.

I know, it was a nice dream to have.  Compared to the Japanese sources, they don't tell us anything over here.

Take, for example, the Girl's Box Movie "Lovers High" (DVD comes out August 16th 2008 -- that's this Saturday!!!), which is something I've been looking forward to seeing/owning for about a year now, maybe it's been longer.  To the kind people reading this, try searching for this film on Google, or anywhere else, I dare ya.  Find anything?

Okay, I know who's in it because I've seen the poster.  I know how much it costs because CDJapan is nice enough to spell the title in English.  I know it came out in 2008 because I'm livin' it.  So in blind faith I've spent more than $50 on the Special Edition, and I have no idea what's so darned 'Special' about it!  According to the CDJapan listing, there are NO SUBTITLES in either edition, so I'll spend a lot of time not knowing what anyone's talking about.  You'd think they could give a nod to the Western world for that price, and seriously, I hope the movie does well, but who else is going to understand it besides the natives?  Throw us a bone!

Then, contrast this with the encyclopedias being written about certain other artists (hey there, Tsunku!) who seem equally unconcerned with catering to the West.  Yet, the word is out and they're pushing wheelbarrows (yes, plural) filled with dollars and euros.

I like H!P, believe me, but the difference is fan support.  If only Avex would be slightly more aggressive in their marketing, their fans could be as rabid as most H!P fans and we might know the answers to a lot of Avex questions gone (thus far) unanswered in English.

I'm probably more uppity than most people, learning how to read kana and kanji... and for those of you who think Japanese would be impossible to figure out, I was once like you, believe it or not.  I'm still not very good at it, but I'm the resident 'expert' in my corner of the world.

So, I'll do my best with the skills and information that I have, and I'll try not to go on endlessly about this disparity.  Maybe we'll get a few rabid fans on this side of the fence.

Introduction

Ms. Kayo,

This website has three purposes:

First, it's a serious attempt, via the internet, to say hello to you, a Japanese idol singer.

Second, it serves as a resource for those who may wish to join your cause as fans.

Third, it's an open petition to the entertainment industry to encourage continued support for your career.

To the world: buy the Girl's Box NatsuMatsuri DVD and be dazzled by Aiko's presence.

We enjoy seeing you perform live because it lets us know that you're alive and well.

Keep going, and I'll be in the crowd someday. That would be cool.

Thank you for the music, it makes us feel good.
