Fake Tan: It's Easier Than You Think

Fake Tan: It's Easier Than You Think

Author: Charlotte Bleasdale

If you've got milk bottle legs and are longing for a golden glow – don't fear the fake tan! Getting it right is easier than you think. Use it for a special occasion or do it at home to save money you'd spend at the salon.

Follow these three easy steps and you'll be looking chic and sun-kissed in no time.

Prepare your skin

Getting your skin ready for your tan is almost as important as the way you apply it and a step that women are often tempted to skip. We're not talking a last minute moisturise here! Here's how to do it properly.

The first step is to get your legs hair free so the tan goes on smoothly. Do this well in advance of when you plan to apply the tan – at least 24 hours before if you're shaving, or two days if you're waxing. If you do it too close your pores will be open and will collect the tan.

Next, use an exfoliating scrub all over your body to remove any dry skin. Give plenty of attention to extra-dry bits such as your elbows, knees, ankles and heels. This will make your skin extra smooth, allowing the tan to glide on easily. It will also prolong the life of your tan as you won't be applying tan to old skin that's due to be shed any naturally anyway.

The final preparation step is to moisturise all over, using more in those problem dry spots. Don't leave this until the day of your tan as it will stop the tan from sticking.

Applying your tanning product

Choose a shade of fake tan that's appropriate for your skin tone to get the most natural look. Whether you prefer spray, mousse, cream or gel is really down to a matter of personal preference so why not try a different one each time until you find your favourite? If you're new to fake tanning, a moisturiser with fake tan is a good place to start as you can build your tan up slowly and you can't really go wrong as it's so light.

Fake tan can stain your clothes, so just before bed is the best time to apply it. You can then pop an old pair of pyjamas on and give your tan plenty of time to develop overnight. Even so, you'll need to waist at least ten minutes before wearing any type of loose clothing.

Apply your fake tan with your hands, or if you're worried about them becoming too stained, wear latex gloves or a tanning mitt.

It's best to start applying at your feet and work up, or vice-versa. If you're worried about applying it to your face, try a special facial tanning cream that's more gently, or dilute ordinary fake tan with a little moisturiser. If it comes out lighter than you'd like you can always wear bronzer – better too light than too dark when it comes to your face.

If you've decided not to wear gloves you'll now need to thoroughly wash your hands. You can then add a light layer of tan to your hands (removing all jewellery first), blending very carefully between your fingers and at the wrists.

For a deep tan you can reapply up to three times, but make sure you allow you're tan to fully develop before adding a second coat or you could end up more tanned than you intended. You'll need to avoid having a shower or a bath for at least eight hours after you've put your tan on, and try to avoid water generally for at least three.

Maintaining your tan

To prolong the life of your tan and keep it looking its best, make sure you moisturise every day. After five days or so, exfoliate lightly to get rid of any dead skin and to ensure your tan does not go patchy as it fades. To keep your tan topped up, you can reapply your fake tan on the day of exfoliation.

Music = Good for You

Ordinarily, reading news on CNN doesn't lift my spirits, but I read an article yesterday which I'd like to share both as a musician and as a Jpop enthusiast. Get ready for a windfall: listening to music is healthy for your heart and "may slow down the aging process." And I thought I was just severely damaging my hearing.

Some of the more interesting points: listening to music you enjoy is a stress-reliever and it causes blood vessels to expand, lowering the risk of heart attacks and strokes. It "gives [you] an overall feeling of good, well-being -- a sense of euphoria in some cases." Music has been shown to improve self-esteem and mood. Thanks, Ms. Kayo...

Another interesting thing is that listening to music you *don't* like has the opposite effect on the body.

Lastly, it's important to have variety in your listening. "Listening repeatedly to the same tune diminished the music's effects on the body. 'You just don't get that boost if you listen to the same song over and over again," says the doctor who conducted this study. 'You need to vary your songs, so when you hear the song fresh, it brings back the sense of joy and opens up the system.'"

All the more reason to live it up with your favorite music from all genres, and put on that Rammstein album when the Berryz Kobo album finishes.

Craig Alan Bittner, "Lipo-Diesel" Doctor, Fueled Cars Using Human Fat

"Lipo-Diesel" Doctor Craig Alan Bittner (dralanbittner.com)

Plastic surgeon Craig Alan Bittner, of now closed Beverly Hills Liposculpture clinic, used liposuctioned fat from his patients to power SUVs, according to the reports. Though of his fat-for-fuel or "lipodiesel" intention, what  Dr. Craig Alan Bittner had done has apparently brushed with California's law which bans to use human medical waste as vehicle fuels.

A former Beverly Hills plastic surgeon is in trouble with the law because he fueled his car with human fat sucked from his patients.

Craig Alan Bittner apparently created "lipo-diesel" from his patient's fat and used it to fuel his Ford SUV and his girlfriend's Lincoln Navigator.

California public health officials say that it is illegal because state law forbids the use of human medical waste to power vehicles.

Bittner said he was trying to be environmentally friendly by using the "lipo-diesel."

"The vast majority of my patients request that I use their fat for fuel -- and I have more fat than I can use," Bittner wrote on lipodiesel.com, which is no longer online. "Not only do they get to lsoe their love handles or chubby belly but they get to take part in saving the earth."

His patients might not have been such willing participants, however.

...

It's unclear when he started and stopped making his "lipo-diesel" or how he made it. [Chinadaily]

The California Department of Public Health is now investigating the issue, but Alan Bittner has moved to South America “to volunteer with a small clinic...where he can help those most in need,”  possibly in an intention to escaping of being examined.

"Third-Hand Smoke" Threat

no smoking sign

"Third-hand smoke" is a new term invented by pediatricians from Boston's MassGeneral Hospital for Children. If the threats from second-hand smoke is relatively easy to be relieved by ventilating the air, those of third-hand smoke may be persistent. What's the worse is the children whose parents smoke are posed under direct threats. From New York Times:

Parents who smoke often open a window or turn on a fan to clear the air of second-hand smoke, but experts now have identified another smoking-related threat to children’s health that isn’t as easy to get rid of: third-hand smoke.

That’s the term being used to describe the invisible yet toxic brew of gases and particles clinging to smokers’ hair and clothing, not to mention cushions and carpeting, that lingers long after smoke has cleared from a room. The residue includes heavy metals, carcinogens and even radioactive materials that young children can get on their hands and ingest, especially if they’re crawling or playing on the floor.

Doctors from MassGeneral Hospital for Children in Boston coined the term “third-hand smoke” to describe these chemicals in a new study that focused on the risks they pose to infants and children. The study was published in this month’s issue of the journal Pediatrics.

...

Among the substances in third-hand smoke are hydrogen cyanide, used in chemical weapons; butane, which is used in lighter fluid; toluene, found in paint thinners; arsenic; lead; carbon monoxide; and even polonium-210, the highly radioactive carcinogen that was used to murder former Russian spy Alexander V. Litvinenko[picture, wikipedia] in 2006. Eleven of the compounds are highly carcinogenic.

So for your own health as well as your family members, please stop smoking!

Dianne Odell Killed After Iron Lung Suffered Power Failure

Dianne Odell, an inspirational lady from Tennessee who spent nearly six decades of her life in an iron lung, died after her breath-supporting machine was stricken by a power failure. Ms. Odell suffe

A woman who spent nearly 60 years of her life in an iron lung after being diagnosed with polio as a child died Wednesday after a power failure shut down the machine that kept her breathing, her family said.

Dianne Odell, 61, had been confined to the 7-foot-long machine since she was stricken by polio at 3 years old.

Family members were unable to get an emergency generator working for the iron lung after a power failure knocked out electricity to the Odell family's residence near Jackson, about 80 miles northeast of Memphis, brother-in-law Will Beyer said.

"We did everything we could do but we couldn't keep her breathing," said Beyer, who was called to the home shortly after the power failed. "Dianne had gotten a lot weaker over the past several months and she just didn't have the strength to keep going."

Capt. Jerry Elston of the Madison County Sheriff's Department said emergency crews were called to the scene, but could do little to help.

Odell was afflicted with "bulbo-spinal" polio three years before a polio vaccine was discovered and largely stopped the spread of the crippling childhood disease.

She spent her life in the iron lung, cared for by her parents and other family members. Though confined inside the 750-pound apparatus, Odell managed to get a high school diploma, take college courses and write a children's book.

The iron lung that she used was a cylindrical chamber with a seal at the neck. She lay on her back in the device with only her head exposed, and made eye contact with visitors using an angled mirror above her head. The lung worked by producing positive and negative pressure on the lungs that caused them to expand and contract so that she could breathe.

Iron lungs were first used to sustain life in 1928, and were largely replaced by positive-pressure airway ventilators in the late 1950s. A spinal deformity from the polio made it impossible for Odell to wear a more modern, portable breathing apparatus, so she continued to use the older machine.

How tragic! Our prayers and thoughts are with Odell's family. Link

World's First Scar-free Appendectomy

image showing appendectomy through man mouth

The world's first scar-free appendectomy has been successfully performed at University of San Diego Medical Centre, USA. Jeff Scholtz, a former U.S. marine, has recently secured his place in medical history, becoming the first patient in the world who had his appendix through mouth removed.

The operation, which is a major advance in the quest for scar-free surgery, was performed by doctors in San Diego, California, who used a flexible tube to thread miniature surgical instruments down the 42-year-old's throat to his stomach.

A tiny incision was then made in the stomach wall to get at the appendix - a small worm-like pouch attached to the large bowel.

The inflamed appendix was cut away, bagged and pulled back into the stomach - and out of the mouth.

Cranofacial Duplication Baby Born With Two Faces

Cranofacial Duplication Indian Baby Lali Born With Two Faces picture

Craniofacial duplication [wiki], or known as Diprosopus, is an extremely rare congenital disorder whereby part or all of the face is duplicated on the head. Although classically considered conjoined twinning, this anomaly is not normally due to the fusion or incomplete separation of two embryos. It is the result of a protein called Sonic hedgehog homolog (SHH).

In such a rare case, an Indian baby girl named Lali was born with two faces last month. Baby Lali's facial features are duplicated (four eyes, two noses, and two mouths) with the exception of her ears - she has two. Now one month old, this baby with two faces who was claimed by her villagers  as the reincarnation of the Indian God Ganesha, was said doing well.

"She drinks milk from her two mouths and opens and shuts all the four eyes at one time," the director of Saifi Hospital, Sabir Ali, said.

"She is leading a normal life with no breathing difficulties.''
He said he saw no need for surgery. ...

"Her mother, Sushma, told The Hindustan Times her daughter was "just like any other child".

The doctor said everything is normal when she was born. So where's the need to get medical help?" 24-year-old Kumar said.

"She's fed through one mouth and sucks her thumb with the other. We use whichever mouth is free to feed her."
