Indian rights activist Russell Means pictureA delegation of the Lakota Indians led by Russell Means (picture left), an long-time Indian activist and descendant of legendary warriors Sitting Bull (picture below, wikipedia) and Crazy Horse, earlier today declared their independence from the United States, announcing they were unilaterally withdrawing from treaties signed with the federal government 150 years ago.

"We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our Sitting Bull picturecountry are free to join us," Russell Means told a handful of reporters and a delegation from the Bolivian embassy, gathered in a church in a run-down neighbourhood of Washington for a news conference.

The five-state area Means referred to includes parts of the five Midwestern US states Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming, where the tribal group want to form a Lakota Country. In this new Lakota nation, the citizens would be issued new passports and driving licences, and live tax-free. Source: Telegrah @ AFP #Tags: , , , ,
