The 23-year-old American swimming great from Baltimore so far has won six of his eight qualified swimming events--400 m individual medley on August 10, 4 x 100 m freestyle relay on August 11, 200 m freestyle on August 12, 200 m butterfly on August 13, 4 x 200 m freestyle relay on August 14, 200 m individual medley on August 15--all with a world-record breaking result. Now with his twelve career Olympic gold medals, Michael Phelps is just one away from breaking Mark Spitz's 36-year-old record of seven golds in one Olympics.
