With Mirta, Castro has son Fidel Jr., who is a nuclear engineer and the only child the dictator publicly recognized. Mirta married one of Fidel's political enemies, Dr. Emilio Nunez Blanco, in October 1956. They had two daughters, Mirta and America Silvia who are now live in Spain.

Castro also had a daughter out of wedlock, Alina Fernandez Revuelta, who fled to the United States in 1993 and bitterly criticized her father in a book and in media interviews. Alina's mother is Natalia Revuelta.
